Profile
Mel is a Berlin-based communication designer, Event Manager, and Animator. They grew up in Metro Detroit, Michigan, USA, and immigrated to Germany in 2021 to attend art school, where they fell in love with animation, graphic design, and comic creation.
Mel's notable achievements include being elected Head of Communications for the UE Berlin Student Council (2022-2023) and serving as the Illustration Department Representative (2022-2023). Their leadership efforts led to significant improvements in council structure and operations. Mel has worked on many projects, ranging from book illustration to in-house graphic design and event management for art events in Berlin. Most recently, they finished their debut short film, Echos, a story about CPTSD and dissociation. This 2D animated short film explores Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD), following a nonbinary protagonist through dissociation episodes and interactions with triggers, using both tight and abstract hand-drawn animations to authentically represent CPTSD.
Their exhibitions include solo and group shows, with notable displays at The Leelanau School as well as various Berlin art markets. Awards and honors include a Silver Key from the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards (2021) and multiple art awards from The Leelanau School.
Mel's work reflects a commitment to narrative depth, technical skill, and authentic storytelling through animation. In their free time, you can find Mel watching animated media, illustrating, or playing Minecraft or The Sims 4.
